Where does this go? Curt and Ginnie--my trophy wife. Ha!

I have a degree in English from Iowa State University and have written all my life.  "Protected" is my first book.  It is a true life account of alcoholism, drug addiction and how a paranormal experience with a Spirit I choose to call God, changed my life and set me on the path to recovery and becoming the writer I always wanted to be.  All of my life I have felt like I have been "protected."  Some of the stories of how I was protected are funny, some are subtle, and some are violent.  When God wants to get your attention, He can use extreme measures.  All of the stories are true.  I have self-published this book.  A second book of short stories will be out in 2019.

I also write a weekly newspaper column, "Empty Nest" that is in 25 Iowa newspapers.  It is a human interest column that is 15 years old.  I write for free.  If you're an artist and you want to practice your art, you will do whatever it takes, even if it means giving it away.  The column is an excellent creative outlet for me, as well as wonderful discipline--it requires me to write every week.  And I haven't missed a week in 15 years.  I write even when I'm on vacation, the wonders of the World Wide Web allowing me to do so.

I'm also a metal sculptor and hack photographer.  I like to take old rusty farm junk and make sculptures.  It's a way of preserving some of the old-time farm equipment and turning it into works of art.  My metal sculptures and photographs have won numerous awards.  By the way, I'm a self-taught welder.  Once again, if you want to do something bad enough, you will find a way to figure it out.  Needless to say, in the learning process, I just about burned the garage down, and scorched my eye balls using the plasma cutter, and had to be taken to the emergency room by ambulance at 2:00 in the morning.  But by golly did I learn how to weld!

I teach creative writing once a year in the wintertime at my home in Mt. Pleasant.  I limit the class to no more than six serious writers or wannabe writers.  If you're interested, contact me.
